Areas We Can Support Children

Our compassionate child therapy services include support for ADHD, autism, depression, PTSD, trauma, and more. We are dedicated to offering counselling that helps your child thrive.

Anxiety disorders can manifest in your child as excessive fear, worry, or nervousness. This can include general anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobias, separation anxiety, or selective mutism. If your child is struggling with anxiety, you might notice they are excessively worried, avoid social interactions, have intense fears, struggle with being away from you, or stop speaking in certain settings. Therapy can help your child manage their anxiety, develop coping strategies, and improve their overall quality of life.

OCD is characterised by unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and behaviours (compulsions) that your child feels driven to perform to alleviate anxiety. These behaviours are often time-consuming and can interfere with daily functioning. You might observe your child engaging in repetitive actions like excessive hand washing, checking things repeatedly, or arranging items in a specific way. Therapy can help your child understand and manage their OCD, reducing the impact on their daily life.

Persistent low mood or sadness in children can indicate depression or other mood disorders. This goes beyond occasional sadness and involves prolonged periods of feeling down, hopeless, or uninterested in activities they once enjoyed. You might notice your child being withdrawn, irritable, tearful, or uninterested in playing or engaging in activities they once loved. Therapy can help your child understand and manage their depression, leading to improved mood and a more fulfilling life.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children with ADHD may have trouble focusing, following through on tasks, and controlling their impulses. You might notice your child being easily distracted, constantly moving, acting without thinking, or struggling to complete homework. Therapy can help your child develop skills to manage their ADHD symptoms and improve their daily functioning.

Behavioural challenges can manifest as frequent temper tantrums, defiance, aggression, or difficulty following rules. These behaviours often disrupt daily routines and can impact a child’s ability to function at home and school. Parents might observe their child struggling with authority, having frequent outbursts, or facing disciplinary actions in school. Therapy can provide strategies to manage these behaviours, improving their interactions at home and school.

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. Children with autism may have difficulty understanding social cues, forming relationships, and may engage in repetitive behaviours or have restricted interests. Parents might observe their child struggling with eye contact, preferring routine, having intense interests in specific topics, or experiencing sensory sensitivities. Therapy can provide support tailored to their needs, helping them thrive.

School difficulties can involve challenges with academic performance, motivation, or social integration in the school environment. This can stem from various underlying issues such as learning disabilities, anxiety, or attention disorders. Parents might notice their child struggling to keep up with homework, avoiding school, or receiving poor grades. Therapy can help your child address these challenges, improving their academic performance and school experience.

Social issues refer to difficulties in interacting with peers, understanding social norms, or forming and maintaining friendships. These issues can lead to feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Parents might observe their child having trouble making friends, being excluded from group activities, or misinterpreting social cues. Therapy can help your child develop social skills, build meaningful relationships, and increase their self-confidence.

Therapy For Children In Ayr & Across Ontario

How We Can Help Children

Our therapists and counsellors use a variety of tools and modalities such as CBT, DBT, EFT, ACT, Mindfulness, and more to aid in the therapeutic process of helping improve your child’s mental and emotional well-being.

We provide personalized one-on-one sessions with your child to address their unique needs and goals. Parents are involved when possible to keep them informed about our progress and to equip them with strategies to manage their child’s behaviour and emotions effectively.

We utilize CBT to help children identify and change negative thought patterns. This approach empowers your child to develop healthier behaviours and better coping mechanisms, leading to improved emotional well-being.

Through play therapy, we create a safe and engaging environment where your child can express their feelings and experiences. This method helps children process emotions and develop problem-solving skills in a way that feels natural and enjoyable to them.

We teach your child the importance of self-compassion, encouraging them to treat themselves with kindness and understanding. This practice helps reduce self-criticism, fostering a positive self-image and enhancing overall mental health and resilience.

Questions About Child Therapy

Therapy can help children in a few different ways. It provides children with an emotional vocabulary so that they have the language to express how they are feeling. It can help them learn to identify their emotions and how their body feels. Parents also learn the strategies their kids are learning so that they can help them use the tools at home.

Being a kid can be tough, with lots of big emotions to navigate. Children’s brains aren’t fully developed to manage and regulate their feelings and behaviours, making intense emotions and reactions developmentally normal. However, if these feelings or behaviours negatively impact their well-being, functioning at home, school, or socially, or disrupt family life, therapy can provide the support they need. Therapy helps children gain control and better manage their challenges, leading to improved overall functioning and well-being.

Therapy with kids is often a combination of the therapist working one-on-one with the child, parents joining for part of a session to learn how to best support their child at home outside of the therapy session, and sessions with just the parents and therapist.
Many kids struggle to communicate how they are feeling. Therapists often use different methods to help the child feel comfortable talking about themselves and their goals. For example, the child and therapist might play a game while talking, or they might colour or draw instead of talking. Our therapists have lots of experience helping children communicate how they are feeling and what is going on in their lives.
There is so much information available to help us know and learn how to help our children. Books, websites, podcasts, and videos are easily accessible and are full of valuable information. Sometimes implementing this information can be hard, or it is hard to know how it applies to your child. Working with a therapist helps create a plan that is specific to your child and your family and helps choose and implement the strategies that make the most sense for your goals.
It’s hard to put a timeline on how long it will take to see changes. This will vary based on the goals, how often you meet with the therapist, and what therapy skills are being taught. Often, some improvement is noticeable after several sessions, but most people work with a therapist for several months.

  • Experience less worry and become more involved in their life, avoiding things less.

  • Feel happier and more content.

  • Show improved behaviour both at home and school.

  • Learn how to regulate their emotions and reduce outbursts.

  • Become more connected socially and have an easier time making friends.

  • As a parent, you may feel more confident in your parenting and have more tools to help your child with their feelings and behaviour.
